Biography

Ramón Vázquez Gaona was born on 1934, August 31, in Vega de Alatorre, Veracruz State, Mexico, but was also raised in Misantla, Veracruz State, Mexico, where his parents moved when he was seven years old.

In 1959, he started a musical career in Mexico City. His powerful voice promoted him to the class of singers Vicente Fernandez was in, and allowed his participation in more than 15 movies as well as his presence in TV programs such as “Siempre en Domingo” hosted by journalist and host Raúl Velasco.

His luck and fame led him to record contracts abroad. Despite appearing in roles in Mexican films, his natural talent for music led him to abandon that profession and dedicate himself fully to performing. His most famous songs include: Por una gitana (For a Gypsy), Ángel o Mujer (Angel or Woman), A mis amigos (To My Friends), El Vaquero Enamorado (The Cowboy in Love), Alfombra de Besos (Carpet of Kisses), Pocito de Nacaquinia, and others.

Ramón Gaona allegedly suffered from Alzheimer's and spent years under the care of his wife María Elena Prom Lee. He died on January 9, 2011, at the age of 78, a victim of pneumonia, in the Ángeles Roma Hospital in Mexico City.
