Annotation
when it was first published under this title ca. 1844, David T. Shaw had credited himself as composer and lyricist, while Thomas a’Beckett was only credited as the arranger. the fact, however, was that a’Beckett, who was commissioned to set Shaw's original lyrics to music, actually rewrote the lyrics as he composed the music. aside from the ensuing dispute over the authorship of this patriotic song, a’Beckett himself was accused of plagiarizing the words of a British song, "Britannia, The Pride of the Ocean."
